What is a Personal Effects Shipment?
Personal Effects do not include items you have purchased over the internet. Personal Effects are used personal property (e.g. clothes, shoes, personal jewellery, books and recreational items such as musical instruments, bicycles etc) and used privately owned household goods (e.g. furniture, carpets, crockery, cutlery, appliances, garden tools etc) being transported to a country by a returning resident, new resident or tourist as excess baggage by sea or air.
Personal Effects for international delivery are classified as being incompatible for transport through our automated Online Self-Service system (Prohibited Online Good). This is because of the potential complexities involved in the personal effects customs clearance process.
If your items are personal effects, please click here to get a competitive quote from one of our Service Centres. If your items are not personal effects, please select another option from the list to continue.
Documents Only Service
You have selected a Documents Only service which can comprise only of printed materials such as contracts, invoices, catalogues, business cards, posters and other similar items (excluding artworks, pictures or paintings). For any non-printed items, you will need to select the regular Export or Import services.
Packaging Guidelines & Standards
We know you want to get your goods delivered safely to their destination in the same condition it was sent. When using our Online Self-Service you need to do your part by reviewing our packaging guidelines and standards - this will not only reduce the risk of damage to your goods but also minimise the risk of delay.
If you choose to have Freight plus Warranty as part of your Online Self-Service, you should note that our warranty only applies to goods that are properly packaged to protect them against the normal risks of damage in the express courier distribution environment. This means your goods need to be packaged using boxes, cushioning, tape/sealing and labelling that is to an acceptable standard as outlined in the table below.
1. Boxes
Acceptable Standard
- You should use a new box. If you are reusing a box, it needs to be rigid and in excellent condition.
- Use heavy duty double-layered board wherever possible and definitely for any items weighing over 12kg.
- Goods fully enclosed in a protective packing case made of timber or aluminium is acceptable.
- An original manufacturer's box in excellent condition that was designed for the goods is acceptable.
Not Accepted
- PACK & SEND does not accept for transport 'outer containers' that are either a bag made of fabric/cloth or a corrugated box with punctures, tears, rips, corner damage or miscellaneous boxes from a supermarket.
Guidelines
- When selecting a box, consider its strength and durability for carrying the weight and size of the item.
- Select a box that is large enough to accommodate the proper thickness of the cushioning material.
- Do not overload the carton and make it too heavy. It is better to break down your consignment to two or more cartons than have one very heavy carton.
2. Internal Cushioning
Acceptable Standard
- Each item inside your package needs to be wrapped in bubble wrap or foam wrap.
- To fill any voids that may be in the box use polystyrene "peanuts" (void/loose fill) or crushed packing paper (removalist quality).
- Goods packed in foam enclosures (e.g. polystyrene) used in the original manufacturers packaging is acceptable cushioning if the original manufacturers carton is also used.
- Goods packed with Foam-in-Place are acceptable. Click here for more information.
- Each item should be surrounded by at least 5 cm of cushioning and be placed at least 5 cm away from the walls of the box.
Not Accepted
- Unacceptable cushioning material for protecting your goods includes clothing, blankets, towels, newspaper/newsprint, shredded paper and pillows.
Guidelines
- Items should be separated from each other, and from the corners, sides, top, and bottom of the box.
- Ensure the contents do not move when you shake the container.
- If you are sending sharp edged items of any kind, ensure the edges and points are fully protected. Heavy cardboard is suitable for this.
3. Taping & Sealing
Acceptable Standard
- Where the outer container is a corrugated carton the closure must be sealed with 48mm pressure-sensitive plastic packaging tape.
- You should apply three strips of 48mm packaging tape to both the top and bottom flaps of the box.
Not Accepted
- Do not use masking tape, cellophane tape, scotch tape, sticky tape, duct tape, string, or paper over-wrap.
4. Labelling & Preparing
Acceptable Standard
- Print the labels generated through our Online Self-Service and tape them securely to your parcels.
- You must place the consignment note/address label on the top of the package. Do not place the label over a seam or closure or on top of sealing tape.
- You must remove or cross out old bar-coded labels and address labels on a used box.
Not Accepted
- Any parcel with the consignment note/address label not securely taped to the parcel.
Guidelines
- Do not consider "Fragile" and "Handle with Care" labels as a substitute for careful and proper packaging. They are a good idea for information purposes only.
- It is also recommended that you place a duplicate label or other form of identification with your phone number inside the package in the event your consignment note/address label comes off the container in transit.
Warranty Information
Freight plus Warranty is an extended service that includes PACK & SEND providing a warranty for physical loss and damage of the goods in transit.
The cost for Freight plus Warranty is 2.5% of the value of the goods. This price is calculated automatically based on the value you have entered for each package.
Please note that Freight plus Warranty does not apply to any items on the Online Self-Service Prohibited Online Goods list or goods that are not packed in accordance with the Online Self-Service Packaging Guidelines & Standards.
Prohibited Online Goods
The description for the contents of your parcel suggests that it may possibly be a Prohibited Online Good.
Prohibited Online Goods are items that are classified by PACK & SEND as being incompatible for sending through our automated Online Self-Service system.
These goods may only be sent directly through a PACK & SEND Service Centre.
If you have such goods, phone 1300 668 000 and speak to an expert at one of our Service Centres, or alternatively complete our Personalised Quote Request form as there are no limits to how we can help you.
Pickup Time Information
When you select to pickup from an address, PACK & SEND Online Self-Service lets you choose a time window during which
your parcel will be picked up by the courier driver.
If you do not wish to wait until the courier driver collects your booked parcel, then you should instead choose our alternative
'Parcel Drop Off' solution which allows you to choose a convenient PACK & SEND Service Centre where you can drop off
your packed, booked online and correctly labelled parcel at a time that suits you during Service Centre opening hours.
Signature on Delivery
Sending within Australia
You can choose that the delivery driver captures the signature of the receiver when the goods are delivered. This means that someone must be at the destination address to sign for the delivery.
If Signature on Delivery is not selected the booking will be marked as ‘Authority to Leave’ (ATL). This means that your goods will be left at the delivery address without obtaining a signature.
Sending to or from International locations
All international shipments come with 'Signature on Delivery'. This means that the delivery driver captures the signature of the receiver when the goods are delivered. Someone must be at the destination address to sign for the delivery.
Guide for Describing Items
To assist with the customs clearance process, it is important that you provide complete and accurate details about all items in your shipment.
When describing each item in your package/s, every item must be listed separately. Remember to be specific, and not combine different items in the same item description.
You should try and include the following details where possible:
- What is it called?
- What is it made of?
- What is it used for or what is its purpose?
Here are some examples of incorrect and correct descriptions:
Incorrect | Correct |
---|---|
Children’s Gift | Toy Car made of plastic for children |
Sporting goods | Boxing Gloves made of leather |
Car part | Metal Brake Calipers for Ford Escort car |
Samples | Material Samples made of nylon for clothing |
You can add as many items as you need to by clicking the “Add Another Item” button.
PLEASE NOTE: Brief descriptions are not sufficient and may result in your shipment being delayed or additional duties, taxes and customs charges.
